The contest was held with the theme of "innovative and marketable products" and "creation of a new demand for tea". Ninety nine items were submitted from around the world (71 from Japan, 28 from abroad).

Eight jury members, including Chinese and French members, fairly judged entries, and they selected the winners of the Grand Gold Prize (10), the Gold Prize (19), the Package Grand Prize (2), and the Frontier Prize (1).

The award ceremony was held at the closing ceremony. Award winning teas were exhibited during the period of the O-CHA (Tea) Festival. Items including tea utensils from the world were also displayed at the venue.
